You can reduce dependence on foreign energy without killing jobs and/or hurting the economy.

"Potential Republican presidential candidate Gov. Rick Perry held his home state up as an example to the nation Friday, touting new laws geared to help reduce the country's dependence on foreign energy sources. Perry noted that the new bills are based on Texans' ideas, not rooted in the threat of "Draconian penalties" or Washington's "big hammer of regulation coming down."

HB3328 requires natural gas drillers to publicly disclose the chemicals they use in hydraulic fracturing, also known as fracking, starting in July 2012. Officials say this will help make the fracking process more transparent. Other states have passed various regulations calling for disclosure, but none actually made the requirement a law. Perry says, "the bill will ensure safety and environmental quality while encouraging American production and reducing dependence on foreign oil."

SB20 is geared to encourage companies with heavy-duty vehicles to switch to natural-gas-powered vehicles within the "Texas Triangle. The gas for the big trucks is produced in America.

SB527 establishes a network to provide for more monitoring of air quality in North Texas.

Clap for the Texas Legislature, too. Unlike President Obama who is touting electric cars while saying under his plans electricity rates will necessarily sky rocket, no such skyrocketing price threats are made for the use of natural gas, produced here in this country, and putting Americans to work.

Did anyone fail to mention in the article that Obama's regulations will still go into effect anyway, no matter what Perry does? An example, the coal plants in Texas are going to be subject to draconian CO2 regulations, except the ones owned by GE?

Sounds like he's for bigger and bigger government! He's hardly got real Republican values. It isn't government's role to choose which industries get propped up.

That's what I thought too. But what can we expect from him? He was Al Gore's campaign manager. Looks like he hasn't shedded his Democratic roots entirely. I'm sorry for the Perry fans but when you used to be Al Gore's right-hand man.....

Rick Perry is a 10th amendment guy meaning if he's President, the federal government will have less control and the state governors and state legislatures as much as the people in that state allow them to have. Right now, he's a governor doing what's right for HIS state, setting a good example for others. Texas isn't Massachusetts and Massachusetts isn't Texas and neither want to be each other and in Perry's book, "Fed Up" he's fine with that.

"The Tenth Amendment states the Constitution's principle of federalism by providing that powers not granted to the federal government nor prohibited to the states by the Constitution are reserved, respectively, to the states or the people."

Laura, I'm sorry but if Perry really was a 10th Amendment guy, then he would not accept a single penny of federal money for any program because that would give the federal government the excuse to encroach on Texas's rights as a state due to federal mandates. And he would not have had the TSA bill watered down to nothing the second time around, nor kill it the first time around

How do you reconcile Perry's use of eminent domain in the construction of the NAFTA corridor with any actual support of Constitutional rights and freedoms on his part?

I believe he's just another in a long string of RINOs attempting to paint himself as a conservative in the hope of using that image to advance his political career.

I'm wondering where he has been a conservative, if at all?

I'll look harder for him actually passing laws to cut the size/and or scope of government, then compare it with what he actually grew the state government.

And BTW, the 10th Amendment is not a choice or preference. It's the law of the land.
