I'm center right, and there are plenty of issues where I think federal gov't can do things more efficiently than state/local gov't. Education is not one of them. I don't see the purpose of the federal dep't of education.

Who cares what Bachmann wants? She's an irrelevant loser. Can't we talk about people and issues that actually matter?

A long-time goal of the Republican Party -- going back to the Reagan administration. The Dept. of Edu enforces, albeit inconsistently, the now antiquated SCOTUS decision in the Brown cases.

Gutting the Dept. of Edu is massive resistance in microcosm or "states' rights." Again, to reiterate, conservatives have wanted to maintain segregated public education ever since May 17, 1954. This is why axing Edu is Bachmann's goal.

I understand why some thing the Dept of Education is unconstitutional, and other's argue they are all about social indoctrination, but beyond that, what have they done that's so great? Has the quality of education soared in this country? An awful lot of taxpayer dollars seems to have been flushed away with no tangible results.

I agree. Edu is a cartel, but one that will be replaced with 51 little cartels.

I think another reason Edu got so big (was part of HEW long, long ago) is because of the Cold War and the Soviet launch of Sputnik. Nixon made it fundamental in enforcing federal laws where state laws were contradictory.

Our educational system is messed up anyways. Might as well reform it.

That's why George Wallace, democrat, literally stood in a schoolhouse door to deny entry to blacks. And the Ed dept was created under Carter -long after desegregation was a fact of life.

Failed attempt at propaganda here, nothing to see.

Remember folks: It has to be racism. If it wasn't, they'd have to debate us on the merits.

Yes, cut it.

Seriously, what idiot needs to understand that placing education in CONTROL of the state is a bad idea?'

There is a difference between the state "PROMOTING" and "DICTATING" criteria for learning. One simply advises, the other programs.

What is the positive outcome of having a bloated bureaucracy like the Dept of Education?

How has it helped educate America's children?

Since you brought up race, how has the Dept of Education helped the black community?
