Middle America and the south will be a near complete no show if he does win the Republican nomination.

Yeah, I have a feeling that Rudy has already peaked in terms of his popularity too, but so far he is holding his numbers the past few polls. I would like to see what Fred and Ron Paul (with some media attention) would do to Rudy's numbers.

I think that may be correct. I'm not sure why this happens, but it seems that initial support turns into resentment if a candidate refuses to commit for an extended period of time. Perhaps it has to do with campaigning and support, and you can't really be "for" Fred if he isn't an announced candidate.

Unlike GWB, Fred isn't a third-generation aristocrat from a political dynast– er, family.
Unlike GWB, Fred has a legislative track record of voting for smaller gov't, less taxes, and more freedom.
Unlike GWB, Fred is a true Southern boy and holds to the values in which he's rooted.
Not saying that Fred will be "the second coming of Reagan"--and I get annoyed when people suggest that. But he does have many of Reagan's qualities, shares much of Reagan's philosophy, and reminds me alot more of our 40th president than either worthless 41 or worthless 43!
If anything, I hope Fred will be the FIRST coming of Fred Thompson!

Part of the problem is that the re-runs of Law and Order that he appears in will have to be pulled, so I guess that is one of the reasons for the delay. While he probably doesn't care so much about the residuals, some of the other actors do and by waiting a bit it helps them.

After reading Fred Thompsons voting record at project Vote Smart (which has every candidate for every office), I am not so sure.
Fred has a weak voting record on immigration, he fiercely voted in expand NAFTA, and a plethora of other issues that seem to show Fred is less of a conservative than he appears at face value. Fred is a globalist/neoconservative, not a conservative in the traditional sense.
Don't take my word, read for yourself.

Speaking of Fred, a well-know blogger, Lane Hudson, has filed an FEC complaint against him alleging that he has "gone far beyond" simply "testing the waters" and is violating federal law by acting as an official presidential candidate. So, he has 15 days to respond before the FEC decides to open an investigation.

Don't get too excited over Fred Thompson. I read that he was a big player in the corrupt Nixon administration. He had a role in the withholding of the infamous Watergate tapes to the public.

Not sure that would hurt him much today, but the allegation he hasn't been adequately anti-abortion, and accepted funds to advise a pro-choice groups a long time ago might be something they are trying to contain before he gets his public momentum going:

I think that as of today, Thompson has practically turned himself into a neo-conservative!
Today in a speech to the VFW annual convention, Thompson said:
"Some people in this country apparently think that if we can pull out of Iraq, our problems are going to be over. You and I know better than that. We know that Iraq is an important front in this war.”
CNN.com - CNN Political Ticker Thompson: Time for a 'frank discussion' about fighting terrorism «
I hope that Thompson understand that the reason that al Qaeda is fighting in Iraq is because U.S. troops were already there. Pre-war, there were no al Qaeda in Iraq, despite the neo-con lies to that effect told to the American People by Bush, Cheney, Wolfowitz, and Rumsfeld.
