I hope that Thompson understand that the reason that al Qaeda is fighting in Iraq is because U.S. troops were already there. Pre-war, there were no al Qaeda in Iraq, despite the neo-con lies to that effect told to the American People by Bush, Cheney, Wolfowitz, and Rumsfeld.
I take beef with Fred's "approach." Honestly, I don't care about an Iraq's right to vote, we shouldn't have been there in the first place. Do you know what the biggest problem in this war is? The media - and Bush - doesn't want our military to kill anyone, instead, we have to "assist" them. Fact is, this war would be long over if we'd just start killing any Iraqi who threatens our soldiers. Did anyone hear about the incident where our officials decided not to bomb a gathering of terrorists because they were in a "funeral ceremony?"

Too much PC for me.

I don't think Pres. Thompson is laughable. Yes, I hope and believe the US will elect a conservative repub. To paraphrase eminem, my question is, will the real conservative republican please stand up, please stand up? I hope Thompson jumps in, we need him.

And I like Huckabee, but he's not very well known. He's quite well spoken, and I like what he has to say. Thompson's advantage is that he's popular: he was on TV as well as in the senate, so people know him. That is very appealing. I think he will scare the pants off Obama and Hillary. (Scary image notwithstanding!)

Fred is near making his announcement of running. He will beat Hillary in a landslide victory in November 2008.

Default Coming Out

I'm pretty sure I heard Fred Thompson has committed to doing the Fox Republican Presidential Debate on September 5. Labor Day is the 3rd. I say he "comes out" on September 4.

If he misses that debate it will look really, really, really bad especially if he announces only 1 - 3 weeks after that.

The perception will be, he:

1) couldn't handle the debate or
2) is afraid to say anything until he knows which way the wind is blowing from the Petraeus report.

and either could be correct but I hope not.

You know Laura, it is funny you mention that (#2) because that was my guess during a discussion last night. I have a feeling that Hillary jumped the gun and Fred was waiting to hear what the outcome of the Petraeus report was as well as the NIE report.

Being Fred is such a strong advocate for the continuation of the war in Iraq and one of those out front with engaging in yet another war with Iran, I do believe this would hurt him not so much with the Republicans as it would with the general election.

Fred Thompson had much too much baggage to be elected president. Even the initial investigations of what he's been up to the last 40 years have contained surprises. His stints as a lobbyist with some odd clients, the trophy wife, the hooking up his lobbyist sons? There's a lot there.

Thompson appeals to the GOP's constituency because he's the most Reganesque of all the candidates in the running. That will probably get him the nomination.

Put Thompson up against Obama and he's a shoo-in. Put him up against Hillary and it's a toss-up.

This morning, Fred announced that next week he's going to officially make the announcement that he's running for president. Is he too late?

No he's not too late. It'll be interesting how far McCain and Guilani fall now that he's in the race. Ron Paul all the way.
