Being Fred is such a strong advocate for the continuation of the war in Iraq and one of those out front with engaging in yet another war with Iran, I do believe this would hurt him not so much with the Republicans as it would with the general election.
Actually, now that I know, I'm more disappointed he's declaring the day after the FOX debate.

Fred has been sucking off the non-campaign campaign for too long. Hopefully for the GOP, he will now give some specifics.

In any case, it seems that Romney will be the GOP nominee.

Why?

Because:

1) We haven’t elected a Senator since Kennedy
2) Along those lines, Governors have the executive experience
3) And Senators always have contend with votes
4) Romney has a ridiculous amount of money and is the biggest used car salesman out there.

Rudy is a mayor who is running off of his running around Manhattan for a few days. He was not well liked before 9/11 and his actions during the crisis still anger the fire fighters and other related groups to this day. Rudy’s grasp of foreign policy is pathetic. While Romney is a salesman who will say anything, he is not a partisan neo-conservative. I believe that Romney will continue the rhetoric of one, but in office it won’t matter and he’ll tone it down.

Thompson has a reputation of being lazy. He rarely sponsored legislation or worked long hours. He has yet to show anything dynamic and is poised to not give specific policy ideas, but mere more generic rightwing rhetoric on contrived social issues.

This doesn’t make Romney qualified, but the circumstances make his success almost scripted.

Big deal, the president doesn't need to be a workaholic or policy wonk. You may have noticed they have rather large staffs, he needs to be a decision maker when provided appropriate advice and perspectives.

Jimmy Carter was a high energy detail guy, and Ronald Reagan was more like you describe Fred. Ignoring for a moment whose policies you may agree with, few would call Carter the more effective president.

Fred Thompson a conservative? Not by a long shot.

List of his voting record from Vote smart

Project Vote Smart - Thompson - Voting Record

He voted for the expansion of NAFTA, his immigration voting record suggest he is out of step with nearly all Americans who see illegal immigration as a serious problem

Although Fred Thompson is tougher than McCain and Giuliani on border enforcement, which isn't saying much seeing how they line up with Barack Obama, he had a rather lackluster record on immigration while in the Senate. As one commentator notes: "Overall, Americans for Better Immigration gives [Thompson] a career grade of C; on chain migration, C; visa lottery, C-; reducing unnecessary visas, F; on reducing asylum fraud, C-; on reducing amnesties, D; and on interior enforcement, C+. Although he was tough on border control, he was lacking in almost every other area." [1]

[1] Conservative Heritage Times » Fred Thompson on Immigration

For an interesting perspective from the conservative World Net Daily that asserts that Fred Thompson is quite simply put a globalist.

WorldNetDaily: Fred Thompson's globalist pedigree

Even though Fred appears to be yet another globalist neoconservative, dollars for donuts he will win the nomination and NOTHING in Washington will change from our current course. Cheney's #1 pick.

Jimmy Carter was a disgrace to the Democrat Party, while he was president.

The Republic party has a pathetic batch of candidates. You would think that they would have learned after dumbing down further with President Fredo, but the Republic candidates are in a race to demonstrate that they are in fact the dumbest ones.

Thompson is banking on his truck name to pull him through. It cold work, since the Republic party voters like simpled minded rhetoric and don't like to think and can't grasp our complicated world.

The best assessment of Thompson that I have heard was delivered today by George Will: "Fred Thompson has accomplished the seemingly impossible. He has gone from 'unknown' to 'boring' without ever stopping at 'interesting'."

Thompson has already genuflected to the military establishment and to the Christian Right. He will be a factor in the primaries. Whether he can gather enough charisma to motivate moderates and independents to vote for him is yet to be seen. Has he ever stated why he actually WANTS to be president?
