Yes, and that's why they used to call it "The Solid South". The whole menu of positions changed in the 1960s, during the time leading up to the passage of the landmark civil rights bill. The Southern Democrats stonewalled the process shamelessly.
The rest of the country took a long, hard look at where we were, and the bill passed. The Southerners (well, the hard-liners, at least) were so ticked-off that they flipped and went over to the Republican side. That hadn't previously happened since the end of the Civil War.
And, that's the condensed version of how we got to where we are today.
So who did these so-called racist, Southern whites vote for in the 1970's?
well, if you go according to jesse jackson, al sharpten or alot of other blacks, Cain isnt a black, he is just another uncle tom. the statements from blacks that say that just tell me that they are the ones that are racist and not everyone else.
I think the anti-Cain, anti-Black conservative frenzy has more to do with the current Black political leadership wanting to maintain their power and sway in their community and on capitol hill.
I don't think anyone disputes that a big shift occurred with the passage of the Civil Rights Act. Think who that swept into power.
Every one of those leaders, Waters, Sharpton, Jackson, Cleaver, Conyers, Clyburn, Hastings, Rangel, Belafonte, and more; are aged, and starting to fade from the scene. They have proteges, the next generation if you will, who I won't bother mentioning here. Theyall represent one political power structure, Black Democrats. Beholden to and given and wielding their political power by membership in the Democratic party. Seems natural enough. That is the way of politics, you pay to play.
Then you have the more recent emergence of the Black Conservative/Moderate, represented by JC Watts, Allen West, Herman Cain, Tim Scott, Star Parker, Janice Rogers Brown, and others.
Both want power. The Black Democrats will do and say anything to maintain that power.
Look what happened from Eisenhower, then up to LBJ vs Goldwater. Much of the South went for Wallace in '68, and those southern states that didn't, went for Nixon. The South went for Carter in '76 because he was a southerner and a need for change from the Nixon/Ford era was in the air. The subsequent presidential elections, whether national landslides for a Republican or more divided races, the South went Republican.
Southern evangelists will not allow another black leader. America is forced to sit back and watch the tea party republicans sink the entire country because of their intent to oust a black president. The southern protestant cult is also opposed to mormons as well.

Maybe if we could find a black Mormon who wanted to run, they'd all just slit their wrists and we could move forward.

I'm a southern evangelical and I absolutely support Cain and I know others who think the same. I will also support Romney if he gets the nomination but I prefer Cain.

Not so sure about this. I have tons of friends who live thruout the US. From the Deep South to the East Coast, and the M.W. everyone i know right now at this point Dem. or Repub, are in favor of Cain, oh even some of my best friends in MS. are for Cain.
Past couple of weeks, those who did like Romeny, or even Newt and what he has to say the last couple of times. Are so sure Cain is what we need. Look you never get everything we want in a President, never. Buesiness sense sure in the hell can't hurt us any, can it.
I hate putting Race into this, Do we have to say Black, we know what he is, why can't we say qualified candidate for the job of President.
Ok gave Obama a chance, never my choice, now he can go, we need someone invigorating to the economy, and someone that will know how to pull us out of this rotten, downhill, sinking in the toilet economy. And definitely someone who does not pull the blame game out of his a-- every gosh darn time he talks, gets old, gets boring, and gets stale.
We need someone new, so far, all the people i know of, and yes i know quite a lot cause of business, are in favor of Cain, with Romney second.
Only Black presidents from now on, because once you go black, you'll never go back.
Go, Herman!
