I don't think so even though McCain would have certainly been more happy with Romney. Remembering back to the convention it seemed as though McCain needed to nominate a "Christian Conservative" or face an open revolt from that wing of the Republican party. I think McCain would have much rather had a Romney, Thompson, or even Lieberman, but I don't think he had much of a choice. I think had he done that and really angered religious conservatives he would have done even more abissmally in the South. With Romney McCain might have gotten IN, but would have lost GA.

At the time, I thought the same thing. I was so ticked with how McCain and Huckabee manipulated the primaries and then to add insult to injury the GOP picked Sarah Palin as McCain's running mate. I really lost interest in the whole race, but I did hold my nose and vote for McCain...blech! Romney really had a lot of support around here and this is the heart of the Bible Belt. Looking back I guess it's best he didn't run as his vice president, because he would have been tainted for this election. Look at Sarah Palin, even if she did cause some of her loss of credibility herself.
