The most tragic attack in U.S. history happened on his watch, and according to some was due to a lack of taking the warnings he received seriously. He started a war on pretenses that are now known to be totally false and that has now cost us over $1 trillion dollars and has resulted in over 100,000 deaths, most of these being Iraqi civilians. He failed to take serious action despite warnings that the housing bubble was going to burst and thus led us into the greatest financial crisis since 1929. He spent more money and increased the size of government more than any other president before him.

What other president has directly caused as much damage, or failed to act when it was most critical in U.S. history?

The argument can be made based on all the things you mentioned except the housing bubble. That is direct result of policies from the Executive and Legislative branches during the Clinton administration. GWB should have done everything in his power to stop those policies. He did not. Also, 9/11 is also a failure of the previous administration (just as much as GWB's) because the prior intel was first acquired during that time and was ignored.

He sucked. I'm not sure if he was the worst, though.

I hate to break the news but Bush is not running next year ... matter of fact, he is no longer President. So its ok to stop the Bush bashing now. Its even too late to blame Bush for Obama's failures...

GW Bush will definitely go down i history as one of the worst presidents of all time. People have to realize that although bush wasn't directly responsible for the 9/11 attacks or the housing bust, etc.. When a crisis happens in our country, it's the leadership that counts. Bush used crisis after crisis to manipulate the American people, made mistakes over and over, refused to admit them, and blamed everyone else.

Herbert Hoover is almost always mentioned as one of the worst presidents of all time. Did he cause the Great Depression? No, but his lack of leadership and mistakes made it worse. GW Bush was simply put: an inept, careless, corrupt leader, and probably one of the top 5 worst presidents of all time.

If Bush go's down as one of the worst (doubt that) he will be behind Clinton, Carter and the worst without question ... Obama.

History's a long time. I think most historians consider James Buchannan, the guy who preceeded Lincoln, as the worst. He failed to effectively deal with the issues that led to the Civil War.

Bush is definitely in the bottom ten, I'd say. But when you think about it, how many good presidents have we had? It's been quite a rogue's gallery over the years.
