It's impossible to say at this point how the GOP will go forward. It all hinges on this November's results and more on the congressional picture than anything else. I also think the state level elections for governorships and state houses will be a big indicator.
If the Republicans suffer big losses in those areas, maybe they'll wake up and realize that appeasing the radical religious loons hasn't been a wise move, and they'll return to a more moderate position. The Walker recall election in Wisconsin may offer a peek at how it'll all shake out.
But, if they fare decently, they may think their extremism has gained wider approval and move even further right. Crackpots like Santorum, Bachmann, and that fool Perry may become even stronger voices of turning back the clock. It will be interesting to see how things develop.

I live in a solid-red conservative Idaho, where several of the county Repub Central Committees have been taken over by the far right- my county is one of them- and they are getting some strong push back from moderates who are running in opposition of their chosen candidates.
There is a lot of talk here about how the party has gone too far. A bunch of senior legislators, mostly moderates, resigned or decided not to run again after the end of this year's session, so the fight will be on in the primaries. There are lots of open seats in both houses.
But that's here only. I have no idea how it is in other states.
I'm from NC and the tea party didn't do as hot as expected in the 2010 primaries because our long-serving establishment Republicans are more than conservative enough to get the job done, as they've proven the past couple years.

No, your claim is laughable. Being mainstream implies being popularly supported. You might want to check some polls. How do you account for the fact that BLACK man is way ahead of your mitten boy. Imagine what the lead would be if Obama was white and the racists in America didn't have that "wedge issue" to use against him?
