A lot of that freedom talk sounds real good on the campaign stump but when you have to actually "manage" sometimes you restrict things, like free speech.

"When a volunteer noted that he was not authorized to speak to the media, one of his new friends quickly corrected him. 'No, you can,' he said. 'You haven't signed anything yet.' Members of the group confirmed that they were told by the campaign they would have to sign agreements that would bar them from talking to reporters. A spokesperson for the Paul campaign did not respond to an inquiry..."

With the "spin" they do on everything Paul does or says...
I think that would be a "common sense" approach for his present campaign,
however:

it certainly would not prevent any "volunteer" from stepping forth and voicing
their opinions to the media - I'm sure he/she would have a "captive audience"

My advice to the Paul staffers: speak softly and carry a big stick

In other words, group speak, you are only allowed to say what Paul allows. LOL

Explains a lot, wonder how many of these CD paulistas are bound by this agreement. No wonder they never respond to post with any more than campaign produced "cut and paste" talking points.

Anyone can speak for THEMSELF, you need to get permission in witing, to speak for SOMEONE ELSE..

There is no first amendment right to speak for someone else.

Then why didn't the Paul campaign comment when asked? All he had to do was disclose what they agree not to do with regard to reporters.

I actually don't have a problem with what he's asking for, except coming from him, it's hypocritical.

Ron Paul's candidacy is going nowhere and we all know it, but that's actually a sound decision on his campaign's part. Press contact should be managed, or one flippant supporter's comment can get taken as the campaign's official stance.

Funny that folks would admonish Paul for not having enough control over what people said on his behalf in the newsletters, and now when he does put limitations on how/when people can speak on his behalf you get all fired up and ignorantly say that he is limiting their rights...which way to you want it? You cant have it both ways.

The MSM is not know for treating Dr. Paul fairly ... Much to the contrary. I think the decision to black out the media is a good one. If you dont give them any rope then they cant try to use it to hang you.

Like others have already noted, this is not what they spin it as ... It is not imposing on their right to speak for themselves, but to speak FOR Dr. Paul TO the media.

The volunteer is free to speak to the media. And campaigns are free to enact rules regarding whether or not their volunteers can speak to the media -- and under what conditions, and regarding what might be said -- and still remain part of the campaign.

Amendment I restrains the government, not private entities such as campaigns.
