Bachmann, Huntsman, Santorum not on Va. primary ballot [Richmond Times Dispatch]

Virginia is one of the toughest states for candidates to make it on the presidential primary ballot.

Quote:
Candidates must submit the signatures of at least 10,000 registered voters, with 400 from each of the 11 Congressional districts.

Romney submitted 16,026 signatures; Paul 14,361; Perry 11,911 and Gingrich 11,050.
Signatures still have to be verified at this point. The primary election is March 6th.

This doesn't even make sense to me:

First they say:

"Candidates must submit the signatures of at least 10,000 registered voters, with 400 from each of the 11 Congressional districts."

They go on to reveal the number of signatures from each of the following:

"Romney submitted 16,026 signatures; Paul 14,361; Perry 11,911 and Gingrich 11,050."

Those are the ones who got their sigs in on time. Ok, so, they are required to get 10,000 sigs, 400 from each district, turn it on time.

Great.

But then they say this:

"The state GOP decided that candidates who submit at least 15,000 signatures of registered voters on valid petitions with at least 600 signatures from each of the 11 districts will be deemed to have met the qualifications."

So are they saying that only Romney gets to run in VA?

Oh how so terribly convenient for the GOP.

WTH is that all about?

They will count and verify the signatures. By law you must have 10,000, but if several get thrown out it is best to get quite a few more than that, because if you miss it by even a few in one district you are off the ballot. If you have 50% more signatures than you need, you are pretty much automatically on the ballot. I read where a couple people said they contacted both the Gingrich and Perry campaigns and offered to help them get signatures but were never contacted back. I just wonder how serious some of these candidates are and why they are missing important deadlines? How are you going to run a country when you can't even get organized enough to get your name on the ballot. Gingrich has already missed a couple of deadlines.
