His comments about abortion and of possible banning of contraception show how far he is from the REAL world of most Americans, particularly women. Perry has the same views on abortion.

Would they encourage/force their own daughters to follow through with a birth, after being a victim of such an ugly, aggressive, traumatic and violent crime?

I agree with that, remember that Huckabee, a Baptist minister, won Iowa last time. Santorum is still polling at about 5 pct in NH and SC (these polls are all somewhat obsolete now though).

Santorum lacks the sine qua non of a fiscally conservative track record to last as the new not-Romney.

Agreed, Santorum won Iowa. He came out of nowhere and blew past Paul, surprising many. Other than him everyone else finished pretty much as expected. Great moral victory for santorum. He might be the next not Mitt candidate for a while.

For me, I think Santorum is an extremist... if he ever got the nomination, I would actually vote for Obama...

Will Newt tank?

Like Newt, Santorum does not offer a conservative alternative to Romney. Like Newt, he is a big-government guy. This post by longtime libertarian writer David Boaz is telling.
Rick Santorum v. Limited Government | Cato @ Liberty

Santorum has his ideas all wrong. He would out-Bush Bush. Social conservative, economic liberal, and unlike Bush, who at least acknowledged individualism in his statements about the intrinsic longing for freedom, Santorum is overtly anti-individualism. This is not the not-Romney the tea party is desperately seeking.

I totally disagree with your first point. The majority of voters in Iowa were made to order for Santorum. It was his best audience. They are just the opposite for Romney.

Regardless what Newt and Fox News and talk radio want to tell people, Romney was blasted in Iowa by negativity. The right wing local radio talk hosts preached against him all last election (2008) and really hit him even harder this time around....along with Fox News, Rush, Hannity, Laura Ingraham, and Levine. These folks listen and watch this stuff and believe what they tell them. The religious leadership in the evangelical faiths was also blasting Romney and touting Santorum or whoever the alternative was at the time.

Last night was a testament to the real strength Romney has as a candidate and people who really follow politics know it. Especially, the democrats. It scares the snot out of them. They sent out a terrified, blathering email right after Romney won that was just crazy to me.

Even with all of that going against Romney, there was a large segment of the good people in Iowa that still saw through it all and they want a.) someone who can beat Obama and b.) someone who can improve this sinking economy. That took precedence.

As far as Santorum sinking, I agree and the sooner the better imo.

Its amazing that Santorum could shoot up in the polls, yet Huntsman, who has a conservative record, economic plan rated good by the WSJ, cant get traction...

Huntsman has not been able to meet the modern conservative standard of hatred. Unless you are willing to proclaim loudly, repeatedly and in public that you hate gays and Muslims, you will not win the GOP nomination.

You could google it hear him say it, but I hear he has a google problem.

Santorum is not going much further than the corn fields.

Yes, I understand that and agree; his platform, beliefs and some behaviors put him far into the extreme right and mark him as an unabashed "warrior" in the war against women's rights. This older link might be informative for the women here at C-D.
