WEll that might be debatable. Again, it depends on how you define conservatives? Of course, they were rebels in someways, but their basic beliefs were what many today, would consider conservative. I am also a strong believer what was appicable (spelling) 250 years ago and today are totally different, not to mention the interpretation of the constitution could be wrong, just like many things in the Bible.

Conservatism never existed in any other form.

Mark my words, conservatism will die out. Winning elections is based on campaigning, advertising, debating and MONEY, in order to wake people up and make them realize that the country can only be restored by returning to its conservative roots, not by watering down political ideologies to appease independents.
You are right but who determines most electabile? The media who says so over and over followed by the people polled regurgitating what they heard on TV and then the media claiming the polls of those same people say X is Most Electable so it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy?

Liberty dies when go down the path of electing only those of whom we ARE TOLD are the only electable ones. Don't ever swallow that load of crap. We decide on election day - not the media, government, organizations or any corporations. Unfortunate, too many sheeple believe things about candidates that they hear second or third hand instead of just finding out for themselves. Come on America - in order to live free, we need to exert a little effort! Don't believe your party's line and look to the individual.

They believed in less government than what ruled England at the time.

They were progressives, thinking into the future. A conservative approach would have been sticking with status quo forever (and a democratic republic wasn't it, at the time).

I agree, however I think the OP was talking specifically about Consitutional conservatism.

Most conservative = Most extreme = Least electable.

Most liberal = Most extreme = Least electable.

This is not a hard concept to grasp. The Democrats seem to understand it. Throwing in a Democratic candidate who wants to promote legalized nudity everywhere, ban the consumption of meat, legalize prostitution, legalize drugs/tobacco/alcohol with no more age limits, outright legalize gay, polygamous, and polyandrous marriages, etc ... <-- This is an extraordinarily bad candidate. More liberal doesn't win elections.

For some idiot reason, Republicans think "more Conservative" is the way to go for a Presidential candidate.

Talking with friends and neighbors in my precinct before the vote on caucus night, I’m seeing now what the real hurdle is in trying to get a real conservative as our GOP nominee. These are good and honest people, but they are also by nature conservative (in more than just the political sense). They are letting their conservative nature cloud their judgment. All I kept hearing from Romney supporters was he was the safest bet to beat Obama. That is ALL they could offer….and I heard this repeatedly. Their main drive is to assure Obama is defeated…they are scared to death of a second term… and this is how they are making their decision. Period. They are NOT paying attention to issues and don’t have the appetite IMO (given their conservative natures), to entertain any candidate that to them doesn’t seem like a sure thing.

Until people can be convinced he is not electable (or they can be convinced to vote on principle vs. perceived electability), Romney will continue to lead this race right up to the general election.

Too bad they don't realize that Ron Paul is not actually a conservative but a libertarian...very different.
