Good point, Smash255, and remember Kennedy went out of his way to repeatedly refute any mixing of the 2, so that may be the root to the averion to mixing the 2. Personally, I am an ardent supporter of not mixing the two under any circumstances.
It seemed to be much more about hardcore social conservatism and theocratic principles than healthcare.
It's about both, but Obamacare adversely affects much of what healthcare providers do and their bottom line. The Catholic church is heavily involved in healthcare.
I am not sure, but I would think they do want to support someone who can win. So many of Obama's policies have adversely affected programs of the Catholic church and will impact them even further as Obamacare goes completely into affect. Obviously, they have faith that Mitt Romney will overturn Obamacare and is a defender of life.
which of Obama's policies is affecting the catholic church? as far as I know, the full effects of health reform don't really begin until 2014. If you're talking about Obama not giving federal taxpayer $$ to these organizations so that they can discriminate as much as they want, that's not a very good argument. If the churches want to discriminate, then why can't they do it on their own dime without taxpayer help? No person, corporation (oh duh- same thing) has a RIGHT to a lucrative contract from the government.

It doesn't matter when the full impact of Obamacare goes into effect, the fact is that when it does it hurts the healthcare provider's bottom line. Cuts to Medicare and Medicaid for some services have already gone into effect and have hurt healthcare providers. Unless, a Republican wins the presidency this time around, Obamacare is a foregone conclusion. It's a done deal. Therefore, since the Catholic church runs 30% of all hospitals in this country and other types of healthcare facilities, they probably have a vested interest in a Republican being nominated who can win.
I am not arguing one way or another. Someone asked why I thought these high ranking Catholics chose to back Mitt Romney instead of Santorum...who is a very devout Catholic, and I was just say why I thought it might be.
Bob has a good point also, in that they might be attempting to reflect their parishioners more closely.
Interesting. I couldn't get through on the link. But why do you think they choose to support Romney over Santorum, seeing as they both seem to share the same values mentioned regarding life and marriage?
Ray Flynn is a former mayor of Boston and thus probably knows Romney from Massachusetts politics.
