Maybe Congress needs to pass a law prohibiting anyone with money from running for President of the United States. It does seem to some people that being wealthy is reason enough for someone to be disqualified. Perhaps good-looking people should not be allowed to run either.
I was listening to Dave Ramsey today, he was talking about this very subject without naming names. Its such a hollow straw man argument that boils down to jealousy for some, and the transferring of their own belief system for others. When people look at Romney and see a good guy, a decent family man, who has been enormously successful through hard work & determination, but still gives to charities and his church, pays taxes fairly as required and wants to serve his country....they cant believe it. Thats all there is to it.
Right on. And consider this: when the lowly "rest" of us take our capital gains from our retirement accounts we pay taxes at the EARNED INCOME rate. Folks like Romney get to take their salaries and retirement as "carried interest" on which they pay the 15% rate. Fair? Not in my book.
When Romney takes money from his retirement account it's taxed at a much higher rate than yours. And when you report capital gains income it's taxed at the same rate as his. It doesn't sound fair to me either. Why should he pay a higher tax rate on his retirement income than you?
Face it. Your problem with Romney is that he's a Republican. If he were a Democrat you'd have no problem with him. Every candidate the Dems have ever run (excepting maybe Harry Truman) were super wealthy. Didn't stop you and the rest of the Dems from supporting them.
So the narrative is now people have a problem with Romney's wealth? That's just asinine. The problem is not with Romney personally, or with his wealth. The issue is that the rate of taxes he pays has been highlighted at time when middle and upper-middle America have started to realize that they are getting hosed by a system that has become more and more inequitable over the past 30 years.
If Romney had been running for national office prior to the Bush Tax Cuts - and the issues they have caused - his wealth probably wouldn't be a topic of discussion.

I think people have a problem with Romney when he says he "earned his wealth from starting at the bottom and working his way up."
That's total BS-- the guy is the son of a former presidential candidate and the governor of Michigan...
I had to laugh out loud when he said in the last debate that he "started at the bottom of a consulting firm" and "worked his way up" to earn his wealth.
His starting salary at the bottom of a "consulting firm" on wall street was probably more than the majority of Americans will make at the peak of their careers.
Thank goodness Barack and Michelle "Marie Antoinette" Obama are in touch with the common people. That's if you assume the common people are composed of Hollywood elites, Wall Street power brokers and Marxist academicians.
Just curious, did you have a bad day at work or something?

I think people have a problem with Romney's wealth, period.

Nevertheless, he is far more successful financially than his father ever was. I give him credit for being able to accomplish what he has, even if he didn't start in the mailroom.

Very probable that Romney did not claim all of his earnings on the Cayman Islands on his taxes and that is illegal. The wealthy "invest' their Money on the Cayman Islands for the sole purpose of having a tax shelter.
Quite the slander we've got going here. Care to share your proof, or is "probable" enough to find him guilty?
