America's Great Depression is the classic treatise on the 1930s Great Depression and its root causes. Author Rothbard blames government interventionist policies for magnifying the duration, breadth, and intensity of the Great Depression. He explains how government manipulation of the money supply sets the stage for the familiar "boom-bust" phases of the modern market which we know all too well. He then details the inflationary policies of the Federal Reserve from 1921 to 1929 as evidence that the depression was essentially caused not by speculation, but by government and central bank interference in the market. Clearly we find history tragically repeating itself today.

I think it's revealing that Lew Rockwell, the guy who created the racist articles that are currently causing troubles for Ron Paul, is the same guy who created the Ludwig Von Mises Institute.

The same Institute calls environmentalists 'racists', and supports all kinds of other wing-nuttery.

Taking the economics of Von Mises from the Institute seriously is an insult to Von Mises. And accepting the Institute's rants seriously, especially in their gold buggery, will leave a person broke and disillusioned. Or foaming at the mouth- whichever comes first.

I can't say I was as involved as this guy in 2008. Far from it. But it is a pretty good reflection of my own experience. In 2008 I just bought into the word on the street that Ron Paul was a crazy old kook with dangerous ideas. In the years since, I watch Afghanistan and Iraq drag on and on and on. I've watch the terrible things done by drug cartels and dealers continue to escalate. I watched as Obama tried to fix the economy by making it bigger and in the process prolonged the recession.

Then a year or two ago, for the first time ever, I actually took a serious look at Ron Paul, initially at OnTheIssues.org - Candidates on the Issues . I was still supporting Jon Huntsman and it took awhile but I gradually began to realize that I liked Huntsman because he was Ron Paul lite.

I'm still not sold on hating every other candidate. Misguided though they might be, they mean well. I'll even stick up for Obama if he is being hated on unfairly, much as it pains me. But Ron Paul has the vision for a future where the United States of America can truly regain its greatness. I still have high hopes that we can pull it off this year, but even if we don't, the message lives on.

FYI: I have a friend who had exactly the same experience. He was on the Mitt Romney campaign staff in 2008. This year he's going for Ron Paul.
