Mitt Romney won The Washington Times/CPAC Presidential Straw Poll on Saturday, and also nipped Rick Santorum as the top choice of conservatives nationwide, according to a new version of the poll conducted for the first time this year that suggests Mr. Romney retains strong support among self-identified conservatives.
Mr. Romney won 38 percent of the straw poll, which counted the votes of 3,408 activists gathered for the Conservative Political Action Conference, which ran from Thursday through Saturday at a hotel in Washington.
Mr. Santorum was second with 31 percent, Newt Gingrich was third with 15 percent and Rep. Ron Paul was fourth with 12 percent — far below his showing the last two years, when he won with 31 in 2010 and 30 percent in 2011
Looks like a large group of conservatives there were trying to push Santorum. If they want Santorum to lead their party it would be hard to imagine the party existence well into the future.
Guess he is more conservative than the media likes to say he is.
I think it's more complicated than that.
Have you read Romney's biography? He strikes me as the kind of guy who grew up in a conservative environment, but didn't give the issues a lot of thought, until he had to- when he decided to run for Kennedy's seat in '94. There, he had to appeal to moderates and liberals to have a chance, so he adopted moderate and liberal positions, on abortion, gays, guns, etc.
To Romney's way of thinking, getting elected is just a PROBLEM to be solved. If the solution to the problem involves changing his positions on the issues, so be it. Furthermore, Romney does not get why anyone sees a problem with this.
What does Romney REALLY think? What are his "core values"? In Romney's world, the question is meaningless.
And that's why he's struggling- nobody really trusts him. How can they? If someone asks you,"What do you believe?"' the answer CAN'T be "It depends".

But that is a true answer! It depends on who he is talking to.
