CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich is calling for eliminating the government of Iran if it blocks passage through a key oil route in the Mideast.

Campaigning in Tennessee ahead of Tuesday's GOP primary, the former House speaker said the U.S. should declare war if Iran attempts to close the Straits of Hormuz, through which 20 percent of the world's oil exports pass.

Talking tough is easy. What do we replace the Iranian government with, a decade or two of civil war and a $10 trillion occupation? That seems to be how it goes.

If Iran were foolish enough to close the Straits of Hormuz we have options besides doing nothing and total war. I think the wise course would be to do the smallest action necessary to get the oil flowing again. In the olden days that was how the Republicans would have played it.
