If Romney wins the nomination (and with each passing primary, it's looking more and more like he will), will his purported ability to win over independent voters help him win some states that have been traditionally blue?

Great Lakes states such as Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, and Pennsylvania come to mind. Also New Hampshire, which tends to be more independent minded and liberty-loving than its New England neighbors. It went Republican as recently as 2000.

Absolutely not Minnesota and not Michigan or Wisconsin either.

Possibly NH, not only because it's a swing state but also because of Romney's personal ties to the state.

Iowa? Possibly.

Pennsylvania? While the state does favor Democrats and I think it's unlikely that Romney would win it, it is sometimes considered a swing state (despite the fact that no Republican has won PA since 1988) and there is a chance. See this article -

Pennsylvania Still a Tall Order For Obama - Salena Zito - Townhall Conservative Columnists - Page 1

You're obviously pretty new to this forum. Welcome. Just an FYI - this forum is dominated by Paul and Obama supporters. I guarantee many posters will post a lot of anti-Romney crap on this thread and say he has absolutely zero chance in any of those states (or even in many other swing states that really are true swing states).

He's not taking the upper midwest. He might get New Hampshire. That's about it.

Ohio, Indiana and an outside shot at Pennsylvania.

Mitt isn't the problem, it's the GOP. They went all out attacking unions and in the Great Lakes states unions are extremely powerful.

This thread isn't about Ohio or Indiana.

But, if you want to bring those two into the conversation, let's do so...

I think it's very unlikely that Obama will win Indiana again.

Ohio? It's the ultimate swing state. The bellwether. No Republican has ever won the presidency without winning Ohio and no Democrat has since 1960. Romney really has to win it if he wants to win the election. I can only imagine how many ads (from both sides) Ohioans will be seeing now that we have Super PAC's. Ohio really depends on how the economy does between now and November (and also how long the GOP infighting continues).

I would be shocked if Romney won Minnesota. His best chance is probably Pennsylvania or Iowa, I would say Wisconsin too but I think Walker has poisoned the well there for the GOP.

Wisconsin, Iowa and Pennsylvania have been swing states for the last couple of decades. They have gone democrat recently but not by large margins. They will be a good test to see how the new, harder right version of the GOP plays outside of the Republican heartland in a Presidential election.

They did say Great Lakes States ... which incidentally Iowa isn't. Ohio and Indiana definitely are.

Yes, that's true (and, like Iowa, New Hampshire certainly isn't a Great Lakes state), but I was talking about the states actually specifically mentioned by OP. I assumed OP intended this thread to be more about states that are not really typical swing states in presidential elections since he/she mentioned MI, MN, and WI but not OH.

New Hampshire and Pennsylvania are possibilities and I wouldn't even count Michigan out. They are hurting economically and they have not see the big turnaround the media pretends exists. All of these states that have been decimated by this economy and have not seen much if any recovery are going to be up for grabs.

His stance on the auto bailout is going to make Michigan impossible. He might get Pennsylvania -- he will probably get New Hampshire. I agree with the poster who thinks he's going to get Indiana too. I think Obama keeps Ohio.
