I was listening to Gingrich whaling away on Obama on a recent stump speech, with only a gentle backhand at Romney, and IMO they have a deal going.
The two men have met privately - Gingrich Reveals Discussions With Rivals, Their 'Agreement' - Boston News Story - WCVB Boston (http://www.thebostonchannel.com/r/30807122/detail.html - broken link) - and I doubt it was just to make amends. I don't see Santorum having any part in a Romney presidency, but Gingrich is another matter.
Gingrich gives one helluva speech, and he's brutal on Obama, and I can see him campaigning for Romney. But what will he get in return? Newt considers himself a visionary, so I don't see him as VP...to boring. Secretary of State maybe, ambassador to the UN?
I would like to see Newt take no role if Romney is elected president.

That being said, I think he could help with Romney's campaign since he's so vicious. Of course it could backfire and - in an ideal world - I really would not want him to be involved in the campaign at all because he's so pathetic.
Gingrich was, first and foremost, a master Parliamentarian who ripped to shreds the cronysim that had dominated the House and slapped down almost all Republican dissent for all but a handful of the previous sixty years. It was an absolute pleasure to watch senile Democrats like Florida's Sam Gibbons throw tantrums on the floor of the House because they were simply too dense to realize that they no longer ran the show.
But beyond that point, Gingrich' liabilities become apparent; besides his personal life, it's imposible for a major-party politician not to become ensnared in the usual horse-trading.
As evidenced by the scrutiny given to "Obamacare" this past week, it is my hope that both the economically-orented dreamers on the Left and the socially-irented moralists on the Right will have to face more of the fact that their rigid agendae simply are not practical. That would leave only the Very Politically Correct out in their overly-sanitary overly-"trendy" suburban hideaways to bring back down to earth.
That said, in all seriousness, I don't see a place for Gingrich in a Romney Presidency. What would Gingrich bring? Members of his own party aren't exactly flattering (to put it mildly) regarding his tenure as Speaker.
If somehow Gingrich had won the nomination and went on to win the Presidency, I could see a variety of roles in which Mitt Romney would be an asset. Similarly, I could see Romney having a role had McCain won the Presidency.
But Gingrich? No. There's little upside there, and lots of downside. I can't see Romney deciding that Gingrich would be better than a variety of other candidates for any particular position of importance.
Primetime speaking slot at the convention perhaps, not sure what else you could give him but honestly that might be all he wants considering he likes being in the spotlight.
