To win presidential elections, Republicans need rural and suburban voters; men and women; conservatives and moderates; and religious and not very religious voters.
Romney leads Santorum by only 3 points, 34% to 31%, among weekly church attenders, but he leads by 18 points, 35% to 17%, among those who seldom or never attend church.
And these are Republicans. If the GOP writes off all but rural, religious and ultra-conservative voters, it cannot win the White House.
The GOP "base" is different today than it was 4 and 8 years ago. It's more extremist, 'nut case.' The reasonable minds in the party, the 'moderates,' have seen the welcome mat taken-up. They'll move to the "independent" column and find themselves voting for more Democrats than ever before. It's a sad day when that's the choice. The extremists have been allowed to take-over and re-brand the party. That's as much the fault of the old base as the new.
She is not alone in her thinking..I personally would vote for Santorum in a heartbeat over Obama, but I also thought he should give the social conservatism a rest and remeber what Carville said........."Its the economy stupid!" He may be waiting to get to the general to do that, but I think it might already be to late. I appreciate his boldness and his conviction but he has got to know that, to the media , the left and evidently Paulinistas, espousing social conservatism is like dangling bloody meat in shark infested waters.

When you don't know anything about issues like the economy and what the solutions are to solve them, you talk about things like social issues to divert the attention and fuel the extremist base. Santorum has no experience in the world of business or finance or running anything...no executive experience. We have that now...it hasn't worked out well, so why in the world would people want the same thing back just on the opposite end of the social issues spectrum? That doesn't solve our most pressing issues in this country.

That is just goofy and wrong........In 1988 Pat Robertson, tvevangelist, ran against Bush 41, brought with him the full force of the "Christian Coalition", that campaign energized thousands upon thousands of the so called "Religious Right", to become active in the GOP, there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth from the Moderate, Establishment,Blue Blood's, it forced Bush to move to the right and make his now famous line, "Read my lips, no new taxes." The only difference today is we have the internet, and you have this eclectic group of misfits that believe their own rhetoric when it comes to the state of the nation in general and the state of politics specifically. If anything the GOP has become much more diverse, than it ever was, the so called Party of "Angry old white men", has become the party of Sarah Palin, Bobby Jindal, Nicki Haley and Marco Rubio.....well and Ron Paul, still a few angry old white guys left.

Romney hasn't shown anyone he's competent to discuss anything but the direction of the wind...

Bull**** the Republican party has become more diverse. Maybe in gender and skin tone, but in ideology? No. It's the party of "either you are with us or against us" that marches in lockstep chastising the poor and less fortunate for taking "handouts" while simultaneously handing out tax breaks and tax money to their closest business cronies.
Just because a female wolf hunter and a Cuban man are now a part of the party hardly makes it any more diverse.
