Yeah, complain about "who has controlled", as if the OP is talking about laws. He is talking about... ideologies, and you sure can thank a relatively different era that took shape with arrival of Reagan. Social control has always played a major role in right wing platform (and as I've mentioned repeatedly, in EVERY country). And so it has in the USA. Goldwater's era, however, ended when Reagan's began, which is the contemporary republican party.

Israel was not created in order to disappear - Israel will endure and flourish. It is the child of hope and the home of the brave. It can neither be broken by adversity nor demoralized by success. It carries the shield of democracy and it honors the sword of freedom.

It is an unfortunate fact that we can secure peace only by preparing for war.

Why do you claim that anyone who disagrees is evil, and good for nothing, and a Democrat?

Are such hysterical rants common for you?

That far right doesn't care. Their propaganda masters program them that unions = baaaaaaaaaaaaad and they are to blame for everything that is wrong with the nation

Unfortunately, it would be also why he lost miserably in his bids... not in the north (where he was unlikely to win) but also in the south (where he chose not to appease the social authoritarians).

I agree that it would have been difficult to win elections on Goldwater's political philosophies.

We, or some of us at least, still live in the glow of the inspirational leadership of Ronald Reagan.

For a while, I too equated the ideas and policy direction of that era with the republican party, but for a while now I've realized that it's the inspiration of individual leaders that counts, not parties.

I realize now that the men really in power behind Ronald Reagan merely used him for their own purposes.

Good Luck!
