President Obama’s headline-grabbing flip-flop on gay marriage may cost him dearly in the more religious parts of the black community, reports CNN today, as pastors tell their congregations the president is wrong in stepping in. In a report on the divide over social issues in the black community, Athena Jones speakers to Rev. Dr. Emmett Burns, who insists that, while he and his peregrines won’t support Mitt Romney, they have no interest in going to the polls.

Quote:
Jones reports that, while some pastors, like Rev. Wallace Charles Smith, support the President with the caveat that “we preferred that he had not weighed in on the issue,” Rev. Burns (also a state legislator) has no interest in voting this year. “People have come up to me, are saying they don’t support this, they don’t like this,” he argued. “They are disappointed with the President, and they plan to stay home.”
Anchor Carol Costello followed up with an interview with Marvin Randolph, Senior Vice President of Campaigns for the NAACP, who expressed concern that the attitude of leaders in the religious community could lead to a suppression of the African American vote. “The only way to affect the issues that you care about is by voting at the ballot box,” Randolph noted, adding that many elections, not just the presidential one, could be affected negatively in this way. “We have to make sure that African Americans don’t stay home this year by reminding them what’s at stake,” he concluded– and that includes all sorts of community and local positions that have a much more direct effect on a neighborhood, town, or city than the presidential one.

Without strong African American turnout, NC is all but lost for Obama. Holding VA and FL are in jeopardy as well.

It's not just African Americans either. Young voters will also be staying out thanks to the wonderfully poor economy they are getting put into post-college.

In the end - the numbers will still show that of those African Americans that showed up, >90% will vote for Obama. A vast majority of the youth vote will also support Obama. But the raw numbers will be lower than 2008 and that is what will potentially hurt re-election chances.

It was lost before this, but the other states, like VA, OH, PA and FL...that could hurt with black voters staying home.

Look how pained Costello looks.

This is exactly right. My only additional comment is that Obama really got out both the black vote and the youth vote in historically large numbers in 2008, but polls and common sense suggest that isn't happening. The numbers turnout numbers could be substantially lower than in 2008.

Who is this pastor, Jim Jones?

No one tells me who to vote for nor could they persuade me to not exercise the right to vote. Nonsense. This pastor has an inflated sense of self-importance. And guess who is buying into it...the same knuckleheads who believe that Black people follow the so-called, self-appointed "Black leaders".

Burns is a very prominent, liberal legislator around here. I can't believe he's doing this given his role in the MD Democratic Party (not that he's that prominent, but he is an elected official). He did lead the charge against gay marriage here though, breaking heavily with his party who mostly supporrted it, though some quietly opposed. Burns has a strong following in PG county, but this will not electorlly affect Obama in MD. If this is widespread,it may have a marginal effect on turnout. But tht marginal effect could be all Romney needs. Obama will still win more than 90% of the black vote, but anybody who doesn't think Obama's gay marraige stance will quell enthusiasm with this group, however slightly, is either living under a rock or blinded by partisanship

Reading impaired? Comprehension impaired?

The pastor is stating fact, and is not telling his parisioners for whom to vote.

DOH!

That is fine, there will be plenty of Christians that will stay at home and not vote for Romney since his a member of a Cult, oh and don't forget the Paulbots that will not vote for a warmonger Constitution hating Repub, that leaves the President plenty of votes to run Romney out of town in November

If he was doing it from the pulpit, his church should lose their tax excempt status, you cannot keep the government out of your church if you refuse to stay out of the governments business.
