In this McClatchy-Marist poll, Romney leads among independents by 4 points. Overall, Romney and Obama are statistically tied (Obama is up by 2) and Obama's approval is just 47% - significantly lower than the approval rating of any incumbent president who has ever been re-elected at the time of the election - even though the sample is D+7:

McClatchy Marist Poll July 2012 | McClatchy

The electorate in 2008, a near-perfect year for Democrats, was D+7.

Also, even though this poll seems to have oversampled Democrats, just 49% of respondents said they had a favorable impression of Obama, while 46% said they had an unfavorable impression of Obama. 46% of respondents said they had a favorable impression of Romney, while just 42% said they had an unfavorable impression of Romney. We keep hearing about how "unlikeable" Romney is but, in this poll, Romney's net favorability is +4, which is higher than Obama's net favorabililty of +3.

Also, 52% of respondents - even though this poll seems to have oversampled Democrats - favor extending the Bush tax cuts for everyone.
