I think Mitts decision to NOT take any question was a smart move considering the gaffes in UK and Israel, but his aide blew the trip by telling the press to "kiss my ass" and "shove it".

Actually only since the end of the Cold War. Remember that the Warsaw Pact was signed in Poland. However the Poles were some of the earlier people in Eastern Europe to stand up to communism.
