Losing vice presidential candidates don't really to go on to further presidential campaigns. Only three have done so in the past century- FDR, Dole, and Mondale.

I think they're concerned about the base and also want to dramatically change the conversation - back to one about economic issues. They probably know that throwing Ryan into the mix is risky but they also know that Obama is extremely vulnerable when the focus is on the economy, debt, spending, etc.
I agree. But doubt ''the focus is on the economy, debt, spending, etc.,'' can off-set the drastic fears a Ryan pick brings to the ticket.

This is about framing the debate. Obama has come up with no plan to solve the SS and Medicare crises. The Ryan plan would not affect current seniors. If nothing is done and SS and Medicare go bankrupt, cuts could be forced on those receiving benefits at the time. They need to make sure to get this message out there.

I don't think they're ceding it either, but this is a risky strategy to try to pull the campaign out of a tailspin. Obama is vulnerable on economic issues, but not so vulnerable that the medicare issue couldn't be a huge deal breaker for Romney/Ryan with voters. We'll just have to see...

OK....but seniors who are relying on SS or Medicare should be more afraid of no changes being made. Basically, the situation is bad and will be bad no matter what is done. I'd rather it affect those who have time to plan for the changes than those who do not.

The problem is that it's a complicated message. The ads will run that Romney/Ryan want to eliminate medicare, and that's all people are going to hear. Most people don't pay super close attention, but they can be spooked easily. I don't have a crystal ball. I think Romney had to do SOMETHING to change the direction of the campaign, and he's done it with this choice, but it's a very risky choice.
