US median income lowest since 1995 - FT.com

The median income of American households dropped to its lowest level since 1995 last year, extending its decline during President Barack Obama’s tenure and highlighting the depth of the damage to the middle class inflicted by the recession and weak recovery.

According to annual data from the Census Bureau, median income adjusted for inflation – a closely watched measure of the financial health of average Americans – fell to $50,054 in 2011, or 1.5 per cent below its 2010 level and 4.1 per cent below its score when Mr Obama took office in 2009.

In turn, the lower class is growing!

WASHINGTON (CBS WASHINGTON) – In the course of Obama’s presidency, people saying they are in the “lower classes” have risen from one-quarter to one-third of the adult population.

According to the Pew Research Center, Americans who say they are in the lower-middle or lower-class has risen from 25 percent to 32 percent in the past four years, in the national survey of 2,508 adults.

Not only has the lower class grown, but its demographic profile also has shifted. People younger than 30 are disproportionately swelling the ranks of the self-defined lower classes. The shares of Hispanics and whites who place themselves in the lower class also are growing.

Good JOB Barak!!! That's "fighting for the middle class" alright!!!

Thanks to Congressional Republicans for being completely worthless obstructionist.

Why complain about results that Republicans facilitated?

Your people are losing...

What about the two years that Obama had a complete Democratic Majority in Congress but wasted that on anything BUT the economy and jobs?

Things have actually gotten worse economically and with unemployment since the recession ENDED and Oblamer's policies kicked in.

We'd have been better off doing NOTHING than follow his advice.

Pass my Stimulus and I'll have unemployment down to 5.2% he said.....

The famous graph is still on the White House website.

You are right, the Democrats took a hit for not having a backbone against the Republicans and just doing whatever they wanted, instead they tried to compromise and work with the right. I was disappointed with the Democrats in Congress those two years cause I wanted to see them to push through every single liberal bill they could in those two years because that was about all they were gonna get in Congress.

Technically that is a false statement, if things would of gotten worse after a recession, we would still be in a recession. The word "recession" means "the act of receding or withdrawing." So by not being in a recession, that means we are growing, maybe not as fast as everyone wants, but we are growing.

Too bad for you it is true.

A recession must have two consecutive quarters of DECLINING GDP.

If the GDP stays stagnant as it has at a mere 1.5%, it's not a "recession".

So you are saying we are still in a recession?

I think it is now abundantly clear (to MOST of us, anyway ), that Americans place the blame for the state of the economy right where it belongs: on George W Bush

Even Romney has abandoned the economy as an issue (he's turned to foreign policy, with predictably disastrous results).

Apparently, you didn't get the memo!
