When Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan rinsed a few dishes in the back of a soup kitchen in Youngstown, Ohio, he couldn't have known the photo op would still be a story almost a week later. It is, but not for anything positive.

According to The Huffington Post, the Mahoning County St. Vincent De Paul Society is losing donors as a result of the photo. "It appears to be a substantial amount," charity president Brian Antal told the Post. "You can rest assured there has been a substantial backlash." Antal declined to mention specific numbers, citing privacy concerns.

Here's a local article (I don't read HuffPo) with a good overview, including donation, federal contribution, and numbers of people served.

Quote:
The society received $12,000 in federal money this year and raised about $175,000 to $200,000 in private donations for the dining hall, Antal said.

The nearby food pantry received $3,200 in federal aid this year and $75,000 in private donations, he said.

“If we can’t get private donations, we’re sunk,” Antal said. “It’s not a Democrat or Republican issue. It’s a faith-based organization, and we’re not here to get someone elected.”
I know a lot of liberals who are donating to help make up for the drop due to Ryan's ill-advised "help". If you want to donate, the address is: P.O. Box 224, Youngstown, OH 44501.

The problem for Ryan is that being anywhere near a soup kitchen, homeless people, or dirty dishes for charitible reasons is so far out of character for him that it eclipses any sort of science fiction.

It would improve his image considerably if there were other pictures of him volunteering in other places, or at least a couple of credible people who will come to his defense and tell us that he does things like this whenever he has a chance.

Anybody heard of anyone going to bat for him besides the partisan hacks?

Well, that article tapped into the main vein of this story. According to the lady who dealt with Lyin' Ryan, they "ramrodded" themselves in there, and she referred to the event as the "Phoniest piece of baloney."

Anyone surprised? To add insult to injury, the article mentions that Ryan wants to terminate the soup kitchen's meager federal funds.

The girl on the right is thinking: "This is a first for you, washing dishes?" Everyone knows health regulations require those insert pans to go in an industrial dishwashing machine, with a temperature of 165 degrees or above, 195 highest max temp...So basically Ryan is not doing anybody a favor or acting food safe, washing pots in a sink... This picture is a farce.

Hot Water Sanitization
  • NSF/ANSI Standard Number 3 mandates that single-temperature commercial machines with one stationary rack have a minimum wash temperature of 165 degrees F. Dual-temperature machines with a stationary rack must have a minimum wash temperature of 150 degrees F. Commercial machines operating with a conveyor but with a single tank must have a minimum wash temperature of 160 degrees F, while conveyor-operated washers with multiple tanks require a minimum wash temperature of 150 degrees F. For all types of commercial dishwashers, the maximum temperature for the final sanitizing rinse is 195 degrees F.

Good catch!

And look how clean those aprons are. If that pan had been dirty, and assuming he was finishing up with the washing since the pan is clean in the picture, wouldn't there have been at least water splashes on the apron?

Those aprons look like they just came from the laundry literally seconds before the picture was taken.

Also, I think the blonde woman is his wife, but I'm not positive.

The look on her face seems to say, jeez, dummy, can't you do anything right? Why did I agree to marry you?

I kinda feel sorry for her. I'm sure when she agreed to marry him she didn't think in a matter of years he would become an object of international disgrace.

Exacta~mundo!..

You know they handed him a clean pan, in a sudsy sink full of clean water, with a clean apron.

Is this how it would be with him and Romney, "staged presentations?"

That lady in the picture looks too disgusted to be his wife...but then again..?.

If he was your husband, wouldn't you have the same expression on your face?
