I guess Im a little shocked at Maine passing gay marriage. From what I saw of that state (Lewiston, Auburn, and Portland) it's pretty redneck, Yankee style (Yankneck?), once you get outside of the old part of Portland..
I dont see the US as going liberal, really. Depends on where you are at though...
Maybe in another 20 years, we'll join the high quality standards of Scandinavia, Canada, Germany, Switzerland, Australia, etc.

What evidence do you have that would lead you to this ridiculous supposition? Do you foresee a vast improvement in our inner cities? The border states? The hills of West Virginia?...Chicago?!?
A supposed "moderate" Republican lost an election to the supposed most hated President in history, with 9% unemployment because he was inconsistent and pandered to the religious right. Several Tea Party members lost their congressional seats because they are raving lunatics pushing social conservatism and religious extremism. After 33 consecutive failures of States to vote for same-sex marriage, 2 States passed it by popular vote, and a 3rd probably will next week. 2 states legalized a recreational drug.
This election was a pretty strong attack on social conservatism and religious extremism.
No, it wasn't. But that's what the very young keep saying as a direct result of their recent public "education" programming.
What it really was is a pretty strong attack on what Big Business, personified by Romney, has done in the last 30 years to this country's life quality and hope for the future.
This is still a socially conservative country outside of a handful of states overrun by fringe elements. But one thing the vast majority of average Americans agree on - particularly those of us old enough to have a real-life historical perspective on how America has profoundly changed - is that the treasonous behavior of Big Business that accelerated during the Reagan era has damaged our once great nation perhaps beyond repair.
Americans are fed up with it. And the fact that Obama has at least given it lip-service (while doing almost nothing about it) may have been enough by itself to tip the election.

-Allen West loses
-Bachmann in trouble
-Marijuana use legal in CO and Wash.
-MN rejects gay marriage ban

You need to learn a new word, because you've worn-out "liberal."
Moderation was the theme amongst voters yesterday. It's a concept, "moderate", the GOP as an organization has largely rejected and it's targeted for removal any of its officeholders who even have the slightest hint they're moderate in their behavior/beliefs.
The Tea Party, Alan West, Michelle Bachmann ... they're America haters. The American Taliban. There should be no safe haven in our political system for that ilk.
The votes to allow same sex marriages are votes to support the traditional American values of marriage, partnership, respect. At a time when the national divorce rate is above 50%, isn't it refreshing that a segment of our population struggles for the right to be treated equally? It's an American value worth fighting for and voters in Maryland and Maine ... moderates ... have spoken.
You might want to start concentratiing on "extremists," "racists," and other such Anti-Americans and their attempts to pervert our values.
If the right had supported a better candidate, one who could actually be embraced by independents like myself, then Obama would have given his other speech last night. If anything, this election pointed out the foibles of the right in how they choose a candidate.
Better luck next time - even Ron Paul would have had a better chance at winning than loser Mitt Romney. Until the right can find a candidate who is actually electable and that the independents can get behind, the party of scared white men will continue to lose.

Well... marijuana should have never been made illegal in the first place. The war on drugs is a massive failure, and has harmed more lives than it has helped. As for gay marriage, I believe that the goverment should get the Hell out of the marriage business all together!

This is a northern New England thing. We don't care what people do behind closed doors and don't get in anyone's face about religion. This can be confusing to those who aren't familiar with the mentality.
