McCain's age and health only became a factor in the election because of the flake he picked for a running mate. Face it, if he'd picked someone else, he would have gotten elected.
Not true. Being one of those people who voted for him and knowing many others who did, Mrs. Palin was the ONLY reason we voted for that senile bag of wind. I know of only one person who voted for McCain because liked McCain. And I'm in the reddest of the red states where pretty much everybody voted.....for Mrs. Palin.

By 2000, R's controlled the WH, US House, and US Senate. Then Karl Rove starting making noises about a 40 GOP dynasty. By 2008, D's controlled the US House, the WH, and the US Senate.

There were a lot of us who sealed our vote for him because of her. I no longer would support her, unless I was forced to, but at the time, many thought it was a stroke of generous to pick her. What they were not counting on was her lack of experience;

It's a wash then because I know three people who would have voted for McCain if not for Palin. I live in a red state as well have many friends and relatives who are hard-core Republicans. You don't have to be one to see their postings on Facebook and hear their chatter at family functions. We just traded person antidotes = a wash.

Either way, we were in for at least 12 years of Obama/Hillary. It would have been 16 had she run in 2008 and won the nomination. Now my hunch is we'll have someone like Andrew Cuomo as POTUS come 2020.
Cuomo is actually not that well liked within the Democratic Party, he is seen as too moderate and anti-worker's rights due to his battles with the public sector unions and pension reform proposals.
The Democratic Party is going further and further to the left hence they would be more likely to run someone like Elizabeth Warren.

Cuomo would simply need the nomination. In this era, until the GOP becomes mainstream again and can compete where population density actually exists, the Democratic nomination is the same as winning POTUS.
I'd love to see that change, but it cannot happen without the Blue Wall being breached to some degree.
I was not a fan of Rove either. His idea was to create GOP hegemony by keeping the R's traditional advantage on defense and national security, while encroaching on D's advantage with domestic big gov't programs. Hence under W Bush we got stuff like Medicare part D and No Child Left Behind.
The result of this grand plan was that by 2008, Democrats controlled the white house, the house, and the senate.
