Good point re: the irony of all that. And in a way, same goes for black voters, for whom their church is often the center of the community (whether they attend or not), and who are typically pretty conservative about some things like gay marriage, for example.

But IMO, the deeper problem is that the GOP is really caught between the proverbial "rock and the hard place". They've become increasingly dependent on the Reagan/Atwater "Southern Strategy" (aka, States Rights and disguised racism), and Karl Rove's "culture wars" (aka, cultivate white blue collar resentments)... neither of which takes very kindly to either black or brown folks ("you ain't from around here, are 'ya boy")!
