Well, it is a gamble. Given the ideological bent and intolerance of the Tea Party wing, they might well split off as another far right party. I don't think there is much risk of them voting democrat.
It's important to analyze election results beyond what the mass media proclaims.
Romney got 3 million fewer votes than McCain had in 2008. HOWEVER Obama had 10 million fewer votes in 2012 than he had in 2008 and that was in spite of very big pandering to the illegals which likely picked him up 3 or 4 million or more votes.
If this trend continues, and the Reps get 3 million fewer votes in 2016, and the Dems get 10 million fewer votes in 2016 then guess what happens.
If Obama continues to ignore the needs of black voters and creates jobs only for the illegals -- whose unemployment rates are already FAR better than that of blacks then why would they bother to vote in 2016.
No it's foolish to throw your base under the bus. The only thing Obama is doing is throwing his old base under the bus but replacing it with a new one.

The problem with this kind of strategy is that the Republicans aren't a franchise organization. The more rural and Southern parts of the party eat all that culture war crap up. So I don't think the GOP could deal with those inconsistencies very well.
As a Californian I would love a Republican franchise that would focus on shrinking state government and stay out of social issues entirely.
2016 is going to be a different election because the economy is picking up speed already. By 2016 the economy is going to be doing very well under Obama. This will help the Democrats win the presidency again in 2016. There is a good chance the mid-term elections in 2014 will see an increase in Democrats in the House and Senate as well.
As the economy continues to improve, the GOP will be digging themselves in a deeper hole. Their whole 2012 story is "jobs, jobs jobs". Once the voters see that Obama is creating jobs, jobs, jobs, they will see there is no need for the GOP unless they are evangelicals that are worried about abortion/gay issues.

I was not aware that "illegals" could vote
If you mean Obama's outreach to Hispanic voters, perhaps it's shocking to you that if you treat persons as presumed criminals or less than human, then they probably won't vote for you. This is the outcome from those groups the GOP has alienated to scare up the old, white, male vote. Hispanics, blacks, homosexuals, non-Christians, women, etc...
Start treating people like human beings, and then they might start voting for you.
If I were you, I'd be more worried about Romney employing illegals as he actually has the capital and business experience to do so.
Obama absolutely is not deporting illegals, he's promising them amnesty (only illegals demand amnesty obviously). He's promising them good high paying American jobs. Immigration including illegal immigration was significantly up in 2012.
Listen to Obama's very own words where he insists that "Roomney" would deport illegals but he will not.
