My parents back in VA host a foreign exchange student annually to go to a small liberal arts university in the mountains of Southwest Virginia in the town I grew up. For the last 10 months a student from Finland named Jarrpo has stayed with them. Naturally he has seen A LOT of political advertisements being a swing state (VA). Jarrpo watched all the debates and studied the candidates very closely because he is very intrigued by Politics...especially American politics. I had the opportunity to speak with him over the phone and talk with him face to face several times through the last 6 months or so and he has given me his take on our political process. I asked him to send me an email summarizing what he thought and I told him I would be sharing to get some opinions on a foreigners prespective of our political process.

Here it is (edited for size):
--------------------------------------------
Never have I seen such a brutish match between two men with the same goal and such similar ways to achieve these goals. Politics in the European Union with Finland in particular reference are quite less vile. Barack Obama and Mitt Romney both appear to be in what I would refer to as an elite circle yet both profess to be "of the populace." I find this to be insulting as they both clearly are not. Americans aren't stupid and they know both candidates aren't for them, but their donors. The entire (election) season from the Republican primaries to the election itself were a testament to how uniquely monetary-centric this system is. In Finland, we have a candidate from Kokoomus (your GOP) and from SDP (Your democrats) and a few smaller parties with isolated interest and they campaign a bit...then we vote...no theatrics. This entire race is very clearly money and theatre driven only. That is the root of the problem. Rich people giving your elected officials all their resources...so of course the rich people win.

What I find most bothersome is that the opposing candidates are very similar. Mitt Romney and Barack Obama have very similar ideas yet most Americans feel like they are very different. Both want to cut tax when they are too low...both want spending levels too high...both want weak answers for america's healthcare problem...both want the military too large....what is the difference? From a foreign prespective...I see little. You are voting on two centre candidates...not left or right...centre. America's politics are too driven by religion and division which makes no sense because the candidates are so similar. It is strange to hear so many people argue and fight with such devotion over such similar candidates.
-------------------------------------

Well thats what I've got. How do you guys feel? Is he right? wrong? Are Romney and Obama two peas of the same pod?

• wants more regulations on Wall Street vs less to none (aka, the "Free Market")
• wants a smaller military budget vs a much larger one (whether the military asks for it or not)
• Universal Healthcare (aka Obamacare), vs the current private system
• wants to continue with Social Security vs eliminate or reduce it
• Increase taxes on wealthy vs reduce taxes on the wealthy
• Legalize gay marriage vs outlaw it
• Supports abortion vs opposes it

Those are just a few differences. Does that sound like they're just "similar candidates" to you?

Maybe, from that guy's perspective, they may be somewhat similar. Let's make sure we don't go the way of Finland. To me it just indicates that the Republicans need to go back to the basics of conservatism.

Really? It's up to our military to decide the size of our military? If they don't ask for more, we don't increase the size of the military?

One thing you guys don't understand is something that Reagan said - PEACE THROUGH STRENGTH. Our enemies are not afraid of Barack Obama. They showed him how afraid they were of him when they killed four Americans in Libya. And the White House watched and did nothing and then made up some crap about it being over an obscure video on Youtube instead of calling it a terrorist attack like it was.

We need a strong military. If we don't have that, WE WILL BE ATTACKED.

Oh, calm down, our military is larger than like the next 10 combined. Nobody is attacking us.

Actually Reagan would be a RINO to most of today's RWNJ's. But still, we'll get right on that one (just as soon as the GOP figures out how to use "the internets"..)! Oh, and that a European sees so little difference here only makes all the Right's complaints of "Socialism" and "Communism" all the more ridiculous!

Such paranoia. Why do you never research before you post such crap, leaving it to everyone else? That's lazy.
I know you'll ignore this, but here it is.

^^ That's 'cuz no matter how strong we are, wingnuts will always be afraid of something (blacks, browns, gays, feminazis, joos, muslims, furiners, socialists, commies, atheists, humanists, edu-macated elites, lib-ruls, teachers, science, progress... you name it)! Heck, I hear the Blaze even came out with some paranoid reason they should be afraid of their shadow!!

Yep, if it weren't for the strength and determination of Reagan, American's might have died in terrorist attacks during his administration. Good thing that never happened.
