Scientists are liberal because they spend 10 years in academia to get a PhD, then most become professors or do government-funded research work at universities. Most Engineers are conservatives and libertarians because they don't need a PhD/Masters and their private enterprise job responsibilities involve real-world problem solving and pragmatic, common-sense conservatism.
People do not have kids to have them indoctrinated by the government, people. If parents want to teach THEIR kids that God created the universe, that is their right as parents of THEIR kids. God forbid the government teach kids anything, the way it's run. Believing that parents don't have a right to teach their kids their belief system is a dangerous thought process and no different that the left screaming that conservatives are trying to tell them how to think and live. Why do you think so many parents are homeschooling in this country? Because the government, by way of the public government schools, is trying to usurp their rights as parents.
BTW, for all of you folks who are so sure of a scientific theory that has never been proven, can I just ask, if humans evolved from apes, then why are there still apes on this planet? Why did only some of the apes "evolve"? No one ever seems to be able to answer that, along with a whole lot of other questions that pop up when one tries to prove evolution.
Evolution: just another tired excuse to try to disprove there is a Creator so that there is no absolute standard of right and wrong.
All these guys are doing is basically trying to avoid taking a stance answering this question one way or the other, so they don't anger the religious right that still makes up a huge base of the GOP. And they still have a lot of power in the GOP--look at how far Santorum went in the primaries. Nobody wants to be like Romney, who spent a good deal of his war chest on battling an extended primary... Or just like the monkey-wrench of Huckabee in 2008, which mucked up a crowded field in the primary early on, that ended up with an aging John McCain somehow being the last man standing...
They'll try to avoid saying anything either way, but the eventual nominee won't go as far as to say during the general election they'd support the teaching of creationism in schools. Or maybe they will...
Funny though, that Christie(who I sort of like) is all Mr. Straight-Talk until they ask him about Creationism vs. Evolution. But, in a cynical political way, I can see where he's coming from. You've got to be able to win a few Southern states early on to be able to clinch a GOP nomination--and we know what group you've got to appeal to on some level to win those states. Santorum was able to win Iowa as well--and anyone who wins that state primary off the bat already gets a huge advantage in momentum...
In the end, it'll be interesting to see if any of these guys try to stray too far from the Karl Rove playbook...

If it weren't for science, there would be no engineers.
I don't know of any presidential candidate who has not at least claimed to be a Christian. If you can then so me the link.
