Seems like most of the folks who say Christie or Huntsman are too liberal are Southern true believers. The problem is that the Southern white vote will not carry the day anymore. Having Southern charm is a big plus as Clinton and Carter showed. But the rest of the people just don't want the crazy. Prayer breakfasts and NASCAR and birthers will not carry Minnesota.

Is there any Southern Republican who has crossover appeal? And more generally, given the division between the South and the rest can a Southern Rebublican even win the White House these days?

I don't believe so. A Southern Democrat could but not a Republican. Too much racist and homophobic baggage to overcome.

do you mean a boss hog type like haley barbour?

Or a southern republican like rubio/haley? FYI, I don't think either have cross over appeal that much but more so than someone like barbour.

Haley Barbour has the smarts and temperament. Jeb Bush too. Lamar Alexander is another one. Bobby Jindal has the smarts and instincts if he comes across better.

Mike Huckabee is VERY sharp...but all that pseudo religious nonsense that I know he's too smart to believe gets in the way.

This, I live in GA and the reps we have are well bible belt material and wouldn't play well on a national stage. My rep is fruitcake Paul Broun. We have too many like him and not enough John Lewis.

But Haley is full of it. They had a riot at his college and he said the subject of de-segregation was not really mentioned at Ole Miss two years later? That he befriended the black woman who was almost killed when she enrolled there? That the White Citizens Council in MS wasn't so bad?

He's an apologist for some violent, hateful segregationists. He's full of it.

The GOP will have to find a younger Republican without so much baggage and who is not a former lobbyist.

well first of all, I really don't think many expect Huntsman to run again and/or win..Yes, there are a few, but I am guessing if you took a poll, he would not even get 5% of the support. As for a southernor, sure he/she could. We are talking Rubio, Bush, and Jindal for starters; all are southerners.

Why not? What about Bob McDonnell or Rick Perry if he gets the right handler and and the right man pulls his strings.

Well, Obama was the first Yankee Democrat since JFK. Since then it had been Republican or only southern Democrat.

Huckabee has a Willie Horton problem so I am fairly confident he could never be president.
