In addition, Dayton broke a 20-year DFL losing streak in Governor's races.
It's tough for the DFL to win governor elections when they're always in off-years. We would never elect anything BUT a Democrat if the election was held during presidential years.
Dayton was helped immensely by two things: (1) Tom Emmer is a complete jerk; (2) we had yet another third-party vanity campaign, but this time it was a conservative running. Emmer would have won without Tom Horner in the race, just like Tim Penny and Peter Hutchinson combined to give us eight years of Tim Pawlenty. We're going to need to watch the inevitable independent candidate next year, because it could be perilous for Mark Dayton. I think 2014 is going to be absolutely brutal for Democrats.

Like I said, Minnesota is a blue state. It is not a swing state. But it is also not 'one of the bluest states'. Not in general, and certainly not in Presidential elections.
Any state that is consistently won by less than, say, 55%, will probably receive attention. We didn't get much of it last year, but there will always be some in Minnesota. I expect much more in 2016 than we saw in 2012.
I guess living in NM for so many years it is hard to think of it as being much other than pretty blue. Yes, I know Gore did win, followed by Bush in 2004, but over time, most consider it pretty much a strong Democrat state. I guess I think of states like FL and VA as true swing states and I consider states like NM as leaning states. Maybe I am just nit picking this one?
I don't think you are nit picking. I am in agreement with you on this. The OP listed New Mexico in as a swing state. My point is while it was av swing state not that long ago it isn't a swing state anymore.
The unfortunate reality is that the GOP is giving no indication whatsoever of "getting it together." In fact, they're blindly and stupidly doubling down on all the things that will turn swing voters against them.
They don't care about swing voters. Their latest strategy is to increase their share (and number) of white voters.
OMG, who said anything about swing voters, this is about swing states!! and why do you say they, whoever they is, only cares about white voters? Can you give some good examples?
every group had fewer than predicted and you are basing your comment on one election. We all know there was dissatisfaction with the candidates in 2012. Many whites particularly were not happy with Romney and totally unhappy with Obama, especially the college group. They stayed home in 2012. You need to do a little more research then just depending on one source.
It won't be even close to anything other than red in 2016. Who knows by say, 2026 but look at the elected rep, both state and national, Texas is still very red.!!!
The abortion fight will make Texas have the first Democrat Governor in a long time most women in Texas disapprove of the new abortion law
