Oh, I highly doubt that.

The Democrats need to pick up 18 seats to capture the House. Since the Civil War, the party that controls the White House has never gained more than nine House seats (this happened in 1934) during a midterm election. Beyond that, the Republicans have a built-in advantage in the House due to their dominance in the latest round of redistricting, which was largely undertaken by state legislators and governors elected in the 2010 Republican wave.

That said, the GOP could very well win fewer House seats than it currently holds, cutting into its majority even more. And the shutdown certainly isn't helping its hopes to win the six seats it will need to capture the Senate.
