For starters, the usual disclaimer that I am a Republican. That being said, I do like Brown's fiscal restraint, it has been better than any governor since I moved here in 1996. But I wondered the other day: A few polls came out with Brown 50%, the Republican candidate 34%, and undecided 16%. Why would someone like Brown not have well past 50% in such a liberal state?

Because Brown, like Obama, is governing more conservatively than liberal voters wanted? Just a thought...

Because there are a great many 'single issue' voters. If a president or a governor goes the other way on that once issue, the voter won't give their approval no matter what else they may like.

Maybe they think he's too old. He's currently 76. According to Wikipedia, he's the oldest governor in the state's history. If he's the oldest now, how old will he be when the next term ends?

Does it really matter what they say? Brown is way, way, ahead of his opponent, who has little chance.

Which is absolutely amazing to me. I can't believe that you guys elected him again.

On a side note, having moved out of California (where I'd lived my whole life) seven years ago, I've gained a new perspective on the state and the goings on there. I completely understand why most of the rest of the country has a particular view of that state - and they're not wrong. California really is it's own little world, as evidenced by the people living there, who are also in their own little worlds.

The smart people are leaving California in droves, and idiocy like keeping Moonbeam in office is what's driving them away.

Well, maybe you didn't really understand California well in the first place, politically.

Truth be told I didn't have high expectations for Brown, thought he was a retread. But after having seen what the alternatives were (Meg Whitman - zero political experience and with a style that is not conductive to electoral politics), and remembering how disappointing Arnold was in not being able to get political consensus with the legislature, the endless budget gridlocks...decided to give him a chance.

He's actually been able to get stuff done. It's also helped that the Republicans have lost enough power that they're not able to block stuff they don't like on budgets though this may change this year.

We don't have budget crises like we did from years ago, so that's been an improvement, and the schools are finally getting some money they should have been getting in the first place. And yet he hasn't been a spendthrift either (he's actually pretty cautious about fiscal stuff that goes back to his first stint as governor).

That's why he in a strong position to get reelected.

And don't worry, California will do just well without you.

I have live in CA since 1996 and Brown has been the most fiscally responsible Governor since that point in time, and as a Republican I find that shameful.
