Sell another big government globalist, who's dad preached the New World Order, as a conservative and you can expect many Independents and those principled Conservatives to stay home again.
Put a Constitutional Conservative up there to rationalize the truth and you will get the GOP base, as they will vote anyone with a Republican tag on them, but you also get many Independents. The voters they call the silent majority.
Lie to the silent majority right off the bat and you lost their vote. Putting a Progressive up there, with a Conservative label on them, as if you think they are stupid.

Most independents are in the middle of the political spectrum, not on the fringes. There is no huge mass of conservatives hiding under the independent label just waiting for the GOP to embrace some reactionary.

They're "independents" because they don't strongly identify with the wings of either party, so they don't join a party. Most voters, even party members, tend to be right of center on some issues and left of center on others. Generally only the voters on the party wings are strictly all right or all left, ie, ideologues.
A lot of new Indies these days are Republicans who do not feel comfortable with the social and religious agenda that the Republican party is now associated with. Indies will vote for a moderate Republican. The OP is wrong on that. They might also vote for a right wing conservative over a democrat.

Independents and moderates aren't exactly the same thing. Romney did fine with Independents, but he did poorly with moderates. The hardline "Constitutional Conservative" will even have more trouble with moderates.
Romney won 59% of the white vote, so he must have gotten some independent votes. Only about 25% self-ID as GOP. Romney's problem was that he could not draw the votes of no-white indys.
