Emmanuel screwed up all on his own. Obama neither helped nor hurt him in the least.
The problem is Emmanuel is smart, but he's an elitist, abrasive, arrogant, rude, overbearing, and out of touch with the everyday folks in the neighborhoods. He's strictly a downtown boy who is an inside player.

Chuy Garcia, the councilman who was an impossible long shot, forced Emmanuel into a runoff. He's a working guy, looks and dresses like one, and despite his humility is a very skilled populist. He survived the primary through a combination of luck and from the misfortune of 2 others who were more well known, but even with a fraction of the money Emmanuel spent, he still came in a very, very close second.

…and he's gained ground since.

If I was to bet, I'd put my money on him winning. Chicago is going to have its first Mayor who's named Jesus.

Well said. It's not about Obama, despite Rahm's association with him. It's all about Rahm - and the guy is seen more as a proponent of the downtown business interests and the affluent neighborhoods vs. the regular people.

No argument there - see Banjomike's comments about him.

In reality the election is sort of a farce. He was appointed by the Daley machine in exchange for Bill Daley getting his white house job.

He has since angered some members of the Chicago oligarchy by taking on the teachers union (among others) and so they've withdrawn their support.
