There is far too little evidence and it is WAY to early to tell, to make such broad generalizations, without appearing to have lost a lot of brain cells. But, the Washington Post IS the Washington Post.
I'm not so sure that anyone is all that enamored with Trump, as they are disgusted and fed-up with the Washington and media 'spin doctors.' Who wouldn't like to get rid of ALL the Washington politicians and replace them with people who have actually accomplished something or works for a living, ... or even a group of non-partisan chimpanzees? Thomas Jefferson was right, "May God protect us from politicians who take our money under the pretense of 'taking care of us'".
When you consider that Trump has a history of using government power to gain profits instead of the free market model, he is looking to exploit the low-info segment of conservative voters
I agree with Janell Ross (the author of the article). Fact is, the GOP base is overwhelmingly rural and Southern/Western. It's sad to say but Obama was right on the mark when he made his comment back in 2008, he described the GOP base perfectly:
Quote:
You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them. And they fell through the Clinton administration, and the Bush administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not.
And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy toward people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.
We have gone full circle and become the Know-Nothings again ... now we need another Lincoln to lead us away from ignorance and nativism.
Based on Quinnipiac's latest poll, Mr. Trump gets the strongest support from the Tea Partiers at 23%, but he gets 20% from "very conservative" GOP, 22% from "somewhat conservative" GOP, and 17% from "moderate/liberal" GOP (overall, 20%). So within the GOP ideology spectrum, he seems pretty balanced according to that poll.

Bonus: According to the same poll, The Donald and Hillary have virtually the identical favorable/unfavorable rating. Interesting, eh?
