I've been around for a lot of election campaigns; when I first started paying attention back in 1964 as a teenager, the New Hampshire Primary (won that year by favorite son and moderate Henry Cabot Lodge) was traditionally viewed as the "kickoff"; by 1980, that role had been usurped by the Iowa caucuses. We now appear to have advanced to well beyond that stage, with the election itself still an unprecedented fourteen months away.
With the polarization among the two principal (but highly fragmented) coalitions increasing, and the power of both charismatic? (Trump) and negative (anti-Clinton) movements within the two camps ebbing and flowing in recent weeks, one has to harbor some very serious concerns over possible developments during the remainder of the process. As one who recalls the emergence of George Wallace (himself later a victim of an assassination attempt), and the proliferation of both divisive issues and violence during the bloody year of 1968, I'm keeping my fingers crossed and watching very closely.

Pubs know nothing else since they can't run on their record
It's ugly because Republicans have nothing to run on. They can't point to any positive RESULTS based on their policies which have benefited all, not just the rich. They are the party of bigots and racists, the party who will elect a president who lies to start unnecessary wars resulting in thousands of American lives. Their anti-immigration, anti-women, anti-Civil Rights, anti-tax-on-the-rich, anti-equality message just doesn't fit in this country. So instead of point to their own positives (which are non-existent), they can do nothing but run negative campaigns. They spend an enormous amount of money on this in their losing effort.
They are going to have to do a record level of negative campaigning now, since their candidates all reek, and their record is comprised of nothing but failure.
Republicans might lose this election too. It will be another 4 years of angry republicans trolling the internet and blaming everything on the president. A flood? The president's fault. A new fatal virus? The president's fault.
Next year would be the year republicans could easily win the election but many of their candidates keep alienating non republican voters
It's not looking good for them. It seems their agenda is to make their base angry enough against other groups to make them show up to the polls. The problem is that their base is not big enough to win the election.
