Is the op using this term freebies as another way of describing social programs? Many of which are very beneficial to many.
Just a few of the many=

And the serf speaketh. I don't know why you left the UK if you love a nanny state so much. Keep those ideas on that side of the pond please.

Bernie Sanders is a very smart, well-spoken individual who can clearly enunciate his ideas, but I just can't support him with this free college plan. (same with Hilary and her free college promise). I can't see where it will be self-sustaining. It will cost our taxpayers too much to implement and keep going. It's too radical and a deal breaker for me.

There's a place for Bernie Sanders - the Congress needs people like him, not the executive office, imo. As for Hilary, time for her to find a place in Arkansas or wherever and retire into the sunset with the former president. She's done enough to/for her country as first lady, senator SecState.......please leave.

Beneficial to the recipient. Not so nice for the donor.

Whatever government gives must be taken from someone else.
Compulsory charity = slavery.
Expropriation of property for the benefit of another = slavery.
That the government does it, does not make it moral.

No socialist nation can long endure, once the recipients outvote the donors.

almost all of the "freebies" are things that US citizens are already paying for. take the education component of Sander's plan for example. we already pay for higher education at public university through taxes, tuition, and loan interest. Sander's proposes that we change the system and pay for it with taxes alone. its really a reform of the existing system and not new expenses, programs, etc.

taxes (compulsory charity by your definition) have always existed and aren't going to go away.

I agree, but let's switch to a regressive tax system like Scandinavian and European countries have to fund the benefits and services Sanders supporters want. Fully explained here:

Other countries don’t have a “47%” - The Washington Post

And here:

I dont recall anyone proposing that we do away with some type of funding mechanism to operate the government. That doesnt mean that we bend over and just allow the government to eliminate competition and increase costs, thereby making the need to raise more and more taxes, and thus more and more debt.

The very same segment of society who proposes that we expand all of these governmental services are the very same segment which will stand here and jump up and down demanding THEY get free stuff and not a dime in taxes because if someone proposes that the tax base needs to be expanded, we hear "you hate the poor"..

Well the **** needs to be paid for, and increasing the debt isnt the solution. Dont you care about the children who are forced to pay for all of this stuff as we pass on?
