Richard Nixon tried to pull the same stunt with Texas Governor John Conolly when Spiro Agnew resigned.
Jim Webb said both parties have moved int he wrong direction, not just Democrats. But he would not be a republican.

Jim Webb is Pro-choice
He is Anti trade( at least in their current form)
He said Affirmative action should both be used and only applied to African Americans
AFL CIO rates him 90% Pro labor
Voted against C.O.P.S.
Pro criminal justice reform
Pro EPA( that one alone destroys his chances of being a republican VP)
Pro CRA
Pro bailouts

The only place republicans would actually like him is Gun control and foreign policy, and even the hawks on their side are struggling.

He's also pro-amnesty. Forget him.
