Students hardly had to pay for their own college in many states in the "olden days". Public college was free in California back in the days. And it was far cheaper than the actual cost in most other states.
If you want spending cuts, prepare to pay user fees on everything, including all roads and everything else. Will you be happy to pay $1000 a year in fire department protection and $4000 a year to use the roads?
There is a ton of waste and fraud in everything. Address that and then we can talk about taxes. We can cut a lot and never actually touch services.

Did you watch the end of the video I posted? We're very close to having federal employess and their family and possibly one or two close friends outnumber everyone else. They'd never vote to eliminate their cushy jobs, perks, and salaries.

Yes. What's being defended by federal employees and their family and friends is retaining the status quo of their cushy federal jobs and salaries, not necessarily individual political party beliefs or loyalty.

Scandinavian/European countries? They also tax regressively, have no FATCA law so that the rich can and do hide wealth, income, profits, and gains in foreign accounts so that they're all compeletly tax-free, and many of those countries have also eliminated the inheritance tax.
Is Sanders and his supporters willing to do all of the above in the U.S.?
