Historically to be successful in the early states, like Iowa, the candidates had to actually meet with and chat with the voters one on one in small house parties. They actually had to make small talk with regular people in retail politics. I just can't picture Donald Trump making small talk lasting more than a few seconds with working class folks. Can you?

Yes, this is his strength. He disarms people with his charm and his authenticity.

So he is really going to visit with regular folks in a regular conversation where he both listens and talks?

He seems like a personable fellow who would be comfortable in that environment. Whether he has the time or the commitment to do so is quite another question.

Trump is a unique candidate, and doesn't need to follow all the rules of a traditional campaign. He's out criss crossing the country and giving his stump speeches almost every day. In the process, surely he's meeting with a tremendous amount of potential voters, on camera and off. That's how he focuses on reaching out to people. Candidate like Clinton, on the other hand, give an occasional stump speech, but are more happy to get a good photo op at Chipotle mingling with "ordinary people" before scooting off in her private motorcade. In my opinion, Trump's approach of getting out in front of people and giving interviews with the media almost non stop is more sincere.

I think this is part of the reason Carson is over-taking him in the polls. To common Americans, Carson is more relatable, even to me.

I have to agree with this. I would feel more comfortable having a conversation with Carson than with Trump. However, I feel more comfortable with Trump running the country than Carson.
