Yes. Forced. Because citizenship carries with it responsibilities. One of those responsibilities includes doing what is NECESSARY to TRULY make healthcare more affordable, and that's to ensure that EVERYONE is covered, so that the instance of "last minute emergency care" use is reduced, and use of PRIMARY care is increased. THAT is the only true way to "reduce costs" in healthcare.
Another "forced" thing you do to enjoy the privilege of living and prospering in the United States is the payment of income taxes, for things such as interstate highways, because even though YOU may not use Interstate 95 along the East Coast of the US, we all are smart enough to realize that open and working transportation links are ESSENTIAL for commerce, our way of life, and our economy.
Just like we FORCE parents to educate their children for **gasp** the "greater good" (gather thethe kids! The reds are coming!). You have four options when you have kids: homeschool, private school, or public school, or, if you want freedom from government and taxes, you can move to Somalia. BUT, save for option 4, you HAVE NO CHOICE: you MUST educate them.
Why? Because when you fail to take personal responsibility to either educate your kid, or in this case, have insurance, WHEN you use the healthcare system (not IF, but WHEN) and are uninsured and can't afford it, you make the rest of us pay for YOU, indirectly, through higher costs. Every bill "written off" is passed onto the rest of us.
There are some who claim that they don't "need" insurance, because they are wealthy enough to pay any bill that comes their way. They reject the employer offered plans out there, they wouldn't buy into a government plan, and they wouldn't buy a basic private plan. I think those people are bluffing. No person of wealth smart enough to have earned that money would go uninsured.
The Obama meme that the government will force you to buy insurance "even if you can't afford it" is shameless 1990s Republican smear and fear tactics. Subsidies will be given for those who can't afford it. I wonder if there's ACTUALLY a
significant amount of people who would REJECT cheap health insurance.
