In fact the Republican establishment is not supporting Trump or surrendering to his inevitability as the Republican nominee. Rather, they are trying to take out Cruz as the primary Trump alternative, opening the way probably for Marco Rubio to fill that position and eventually, they hope, win the Republican nomination.
Whether it’s Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad rooting for Ted Cruz to lose the Iowa caucuses or Orrin Hatch “coming around a little bit” on Trump’s candidacy or the paucity of money spent attacking Trump on the airwaves, it feels like official Washington has sided with Trump over Cruz.
In reality, many are trying to salvage the campaign of Sen. Marco Rubio (or any other more-mainstream alternative), and are betting that it’s easier to defeat Trump in a one-on-one showdown than Cruz emboldened by a strong showing in Iowa. To diminish Trump at this point, Republican strategist Alex Castellanos wrote in an email Monday, “perversely helps both Cruz and Trump, which is not what many conservatives intend.”
The thinking goes as follows: If Cruz loses Iowa, he peters out in New Hampshire and doesn’t pose a risk of finishing in a respectable second place. That allows the establishment winner out of the Granite State to build momentum as the anti-Trump alternative.
Ted Cruz is a complete opportunist, he flip-flops on important national security issues, and his unwillingness to try and work with others shows he's immature and not serious about governing.
However, the GOP establishment should be far worried about Donald Trump than Ted Cruz. A Cruz Vs. Clinton election would offer Americans a contrast, there are few differences on the issues between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. On top of that, Mr. Trump has demonstrated he lacks the judgement, intellect, integrity, patriotism, and mental capacity to be President. His bigoted remarks would hurt the GOP for a decade.

Exactly right. In fact, the article I linked above goes into a discussion of all that at some length.
They are playing with fire, gas, and gun powder, it has every possibility of backfiring on them. I'd think it was funny, but this isn't a contest for president of the Moose Lodge. The stakes are extremely high, they are risking handing the nuke codes to a person who goes on Twitter rampages over normal political election criticism.

This demonstrates that political elites on both sides are hugely desperate to put their candidates up for nomination despite what the people want.
What the people want, at least the majority, is NOT Cruz. He actually makes Trump look, um, sort of palatable, in a desperation kind of way. Kind of like dating Hildegard Hamhocker if there is no other woman in the world.

Good post. Must spread rep....
These people are selfish to the point of being wildly irresponsible. They get on television and give the appearance of these dower, booring, mild-mannered bureaucrat types, who are all about making the responsible, considerate choice. What a ruse. In case there was any doubt before - and I think there was - there certainly should not be any more.
This is all a game to these people, and with the priority being them winning, even if it is the American people and even the whole world losing in spectacular and possibly horrific fashion.

How do you know what the majority wants? As far as I can tell, at this point, the majority doesn't know what "it" wants.
Just because you hate Cruz doesn't mean the "majority" agrees with you.
It is a two man race at this point and the establishment would prefer a candidate that will roll over and do their bidding. They want Bush, they want Rubio, they will settle for Trump, but they FEAR Cruz because he cannot be bought off and they know it.
"Playing with Fire, Republican Bigwigs Want to Take Out Cruz"
There was another article out yesterday that said the establishment was going to eat crow and go with Cruz. You know what, Cruz has made a career out of fighting the so called big whigs, or wanting us to believe so anyway. I don't believe much of anything I read anymore. Besides, the National Review establishment is in bed with Cruz, don't forget that.
