White guy gets stopped for an ounce of weed: punishment is a fine and parole.
Black guy gets stopped for an ounce of weed: punishment is three years in jail.
I assume that many of the black convictions are plea bargains from more serious offenses.
the drug war needs to be ended in its entirety. The fed govt has no moral or legal authority to ban plants, substances etc. or what a person puts into their own bodies
I largely agree with this. It's a waste of money and local/federal resources. Treatment is cheaper than incarceration.
The sooner we are no longer prosecuting people for weed the better.
I hope you're only talking about possession for personal use, because then I'll agree with you. Although I don't drink or smoke pot, I can't see the difference between drinking a couple of beers or smoking a joint. However, if someone drives stoned or is dealing to minors, it still should be a crime.
I made the mistake of bringing up this subject in front of neighbors who now probably think I'm a drug addict, judging from the looks I got and some of the comments. I said that when I was in college I smoked marijuana and added that the money wasted on the "War on Drugs" should be used on education and job creation. Oops!

It seems my point isn't getting through. These "weed" convictions are usually plea bargains from serious offenses. I doubt anyone but dealers go to jail for two to four years for possession.
