Well if you live in FLORIDA today is the last day to change your party affiliation. I'm doing that just now against my will but I wanna support my candidate even though I know he won't win. LOL
I'm changing my affiliation back to none as soon as I vote.
Open primaries make no sense to me.
A primary is when a party decides who it's candidate will be - why would you let someone not in your party vote in that decision?

It was a big shock when I registered to vote in TN (same time I changed my driver's license and registration at the county clerk's office) when I moved here in 2007 and I didn't have to name a political party. I kept asking them if they were sure.
In my previous states I had to name a party or state I was an Independent at the time I registered.
When I show up for the primary in TN, they just ask if I want a Republican or Democrat ballot. The Democrats don't send me any junk mail so they apparently know which ballot I request even though they don't know for whom I voted. At least I don't think they do. The voting machines where I vote now are Jurassic compared to the machines in MD.

Because some of us don't want to belong to a party but we still like some candidates.
The problem we are having with the way the primaries are set up is that the majority of voters are now Independent/unaffiliated, and they don't get a vote in most of the primaries. Independents are the most intelligent (my opinion, but there was a study a while back showing they had the most education) so we have too many wing nuts picking our candidates.

Closed primaries is where Trump's lead goes bye bye.
I have never understood open primaries. The various parties should be able to decide who will represent them. This is like a company allowing their competitors to decide who their next CEO will be. Come to think of it, maybe we need to allow Europeans, Russians, and Chinese to vote for our president, because they might not like who we choose.
If you want to vote for a particular person in a primary all you have to do is join the party.

Not only should the opposing party have the right to decide who will get the nomination for the other party, they often will vote just to throw off the opposing side. I don't want anything to do with what picking or blocking the other side from choosing who they would want to represent them and I do not want the other side choosing my candidate.

Actually, I have seen studies that say people who identify themselves as independent are the least informed about politics. That was the conventional wisdom in political science, actually. But I saw those studies long time ago, not sure if the findings have changed more recently.
